The Rhodes swim team started their 2008-2009 season with an all-around solid performance on Saturday against Division I competitor, Vanderbilt University, and SCAC opponent, Centre College.
In the first event, Kristen Griffin, Sallye Hartman, Hannah Emery, and Mae Gillespie, of the national-qualifying hopeful 200 medley relay, helped set the tone for the meet with strong swims and respectable splits. Women's team co-captain, Jackie Ward, swam the 1000 free in a time of 11:16.85 placing second behind Vandy. Freshman Erik Campbell won the men's 200 freestyle event with a quick 1:49.92. Another first place for the Lynx was captured by Jarrett Tate who clocked in at 21.90 in the 50 freestyle. Senior, Sallye Hartman, set a new school record in the 200 yard individual medley swimming a time of 2:17.81.
In her swimming debut for Rhodes, freshman, Hannah Emery, had a good showing in the 100 fly touching in at a time of 1:01.66. Lynn Swiger, a sophomore, went a Rhodes-career best time in her 500 free with a time of 5:36.12. Closing out the meet with an outstanding performance was the men's 200 freestyle relay of Jarrett Tate, Farkas Patay, Erik Campbell, and Alex Lonnecker which touched first in a time of 1:32.26.
Overall, the Lynx had a promising first meet, posting exceptional times for such an early point in the season. On October 25, the team will travel to Little Rock, AR to compete against UALR and Hendrix.
